Q & A for Pensioners in respect of GMPs and the Overpayment of Pensions
This section of the website is for people who are receiving a Teachers' pension - retired teachers, dependants of former TP members (husband, wife, civil partner or child) or people who have been awarded a pension on divorcing, or dissolving a civil partnership with, a former TP member.
Teachers' pensions are usually paid monthly, directly into your bank account, and are taxable. You will get a P60 after the end of each tax year, showing you the amount of pension paid and tax deducted during the year.
Pension Payments from April 2011:Like all public sector pensions yours has been reviewed this year in line with the cost of living, as set by HM Treasury. The Pensions (Increase) Act 1971 is the legislation that allows for this increase. If you are over 55 or if your pension is an ill health or dependant's pension, you will receive a pension increase. If your pension has been in payment for a full year on the 11 April 2011 you receive an increase of 3.1%.
The increase you receive depends on the date on which your pension began. You may receive a lower percentage if your pension started on or after 27 April 2010. If it started between 27 March 2011 and 6 April 2011 you will receive no increase this year.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in June 2010 that the Government would now be using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for price indexation of, among other things, public service pensions. Indexation had previously been based on the percentage rise in the Retail Price Index (RPI). The Government considers CPI to be a more appropriate measure of the general level of prices prices.
Please be aware that this is HM Treasury's policy following the Chancellor's announcement. More details can be found on their website: www.hm-treasury.gov.uk
