Teachers’ Pension Scheme Independent schools proposal

The Government held a consultation from 9 September 2020 to 3 November 2020 seeking views regarding proposed changes to the participation of Independent schools within the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

The consultation concerned proposals to change the England and Wales Teachers’ Pension Scheme rules to allow independent schools to have a phased withdrawal from the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

The proposal was to allow schools to ‘freeze’ their participation in the Scheme, if they so wished, which would allow existing members to remain as active members of the Scheme whilst they remained at the school, but teachers joining after the school had begun its phased withdrawal would not be enrolled.

The consultation sought views on the proposal and whether there are any alternative proposals to achieve the aims outlined in the consultation document (This link opens in a new window).

The consultation is now closed, and the Government have now published their response (This link opens in a new window). They’ll now liaise with various representatives, to fully develop this proposed change.

We’ll keep you updated on our website and in future bulletins when the proposed change has been implemented.
