Transitional Protection – what to expect from 1 April 2022

It’s only six months until the Teachers’ Pension Scheme will see some changes introduced.

From 1 April 2022, these changes will include:

  • The last day of service in the final salary scheme will be 31 March 2022
  • All members will be in the career average scheme from 1 April 2022
  • The salary link will still apply for those with service in the final salary scheme (unless you have a break of more than five years)
  • All service will be built up in the career average scheme and members will have the opportunity to enhance their pension through pension flexibilities
  • All overtime will be pensionable from 1 April 2022
  • All members, once moved to the career average scheme, will have a normal pension age of either their state pension age or age 65, whichever is the later date
  • All teaching employment contracts will be pensionable in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme – any members who had an additional part-time position (on top of a full-time position) can have both contract in the Scheme. The part-time position is no longer pensionable in the Local Government Pension Scheme because it will be eligible in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

Some further changes require government legislation, and until that’s in place we can’t confirm what these changes will be.  We’ll communicate these at the earliest opportunity. But it’s important that we inform you of what we do know will be happening as set out above so you can advise your staff.

All members planning to retire before 1 April 2022 should be reassured to retire as normal, as the choice for the members’ remedy period service will be provided retrospectively.  The remedy period is the period of service affected, which is between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022.

At this time, we can’t provide members with specific details on their individual circumstances as we are still awaiting Government legislation to be  finalised and put in place.  We’ll continue to share information as and when we know it to ensure you’re kept up to date.

What can you do as an employer?
It would be helpful if you could signpost your staff to our simple flowchart (PDF, 63 KB) (This link opens in a new window) which will help them understand if they’re affected by the changes.
