To understand how your benefits work for you in your working life, you need to understand the different sections within the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
Whether your benefits are in the career average or final salary scheme impacts when you reach your Normal Pension Age (NPA) and your family pension benefits.
Career average
The career average scheme was introduced in April 2015. New starters automatically joined this scheme and existing members started to transition over to it. As of 1 April 2022 all active members will be contributing to this scheme.
Final Salary
From 1 April 2015 members have been transitioning from final salary to career average.
The final salary scheme closed on 31 March 2022 to new contributions. Any benefits built up in final salary will be retained in that scheme.
