Certificate of Re-employment – Is your employee required to complete one?

Whether an employee is required to return a Certificate of Re-employment by the deadline of 5 April is dependent on whether you are providing service information on your Annual Service Return or Monthly Data Collection

Annual Service Return

Every year all employees (except those who took Early Retirement), who’ve returned to teaching after retiring, will need to complete and return their Certificate of Re-employment by 5 April, or as soon as possible on re-entering employment.

If you’ve employees who’ve re-entered teaching after retiring and you don’t think they’ve completed the form, then you need to advise them to do so now. Please also remind them that, should their circumstances change, for example a change in pay (increase or decrease), they should complete and submit a certificate as soon as possible.

Exceptions - Employees with irregular hours or supply teachers, who don’t know their total earnings until the end of the year, will need to complete and return the form as soon as possible after the relevant financial year end, rather than by 5 April.

Monthly Data Collection (MDC)

As you now complete data returns through MDC, employees who have returned to teaching after retiring are, in most circumstances, no longer required to complete a Certificate of Re-employment.

They’ll only have to complete the certificate if they’re nearing or have exceeded their earnings limit, or where they’ve multiple contracts with a single employer and choose to defer their pension for one or more of these contracts.

In these cases, we’ll contact them directly to let them know what they need to do and we’ll also contact you via the Employer Portal to advise you.

Important - If you have a certificate still remaining in your Task Manager on the Portal, you’re still required to complete it and return it to us.

Where can employees find the certificate?
Certificates can be completed and submitted quickly and easily through My Pension Online (MPO). For members who haven’t yet registered for MPO, please direct them to www.teacherspensions.co.uk/registration.

If they’re required to complete the form, employees should complete Part A of the certificate and submit it. You should complete Part B of the certificate and return it to us via the Employer Portal.
