Opt out and contractual enrolment

Teachers’ Pensions operates “contractual enrolment” whereby employees who are in eligible employment are enrolled immediately on starting work or commencing a new contract of employment.

If a person is involved in a role that’s predominately a teaching role, is 16 or over and is not over 75, then they should be enrolled into the Scheme.

Automatic Enrolment applies through overriding legislation and augments contractual enrolment in the Scheme.

Further information about contractual and automatic enrolment can be found on our website.

Members have the right to opt out of the Scheme at any time. If they opt out within 3 months of enrolment  employers can refund any contributions already deducted as the opt out is applied from the first day the member entered the Scheme.  However, they must be enrolled first before an opt out can be accepted and Teachers’ Pensions must receive the completed (both member and employer sections) opt out within the first 3 months.
