Changes introduced from 1 April 2022

The Teachers’ Pension Scheme has changed from 1 April 2022, with all active members (and future members) being part of the career average scheme.

Please reassure your staff that any previous service they had in the final salary scheme is safe. These changes are the first part of the Transitional Protection remedy, which ensures that all members will be treated equally, by closing the final salary scheme to further accrual from 31 March 2022.

If you have staff who remained in the final salary scheme and will now move to the career average scheme, it’s worth reviewing the information we’ve provided in our previous news story and employer bulletin, so you’re aware of any actions you should take.

There’s further changes that need to happen to remedy the discrimination, and the government is developing the necessary legislation to allow this, which is expected to be in place towards the end of this year. We’ve created a series of new videos (This link opens in a new window) to help explain this to members.

It’s worth looking at our section on Transitional Protection to understand what this means to you and your staff and why it’s been introduced. If you’ve staff who aren’t sure if they’re affected by the changes then please signpost them to our video and website.
