Changes for teachers with additional contracts to their full-time employment

Currently a full-time teacher with an additional part-time teaching contract can’t join the Teachers’ Pension Scheme with their part-time contract. Where the teacher’s employer also participates in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), the teacher has been eligible to join the LGPS for the part-time teaching contract. This will continue to be the case if the member remains in the final salary arrangements.

However from April 2015, in the career average arrangement, the additional part-time teaching contract becomes eligible in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme and consequently is no longer eligible in the LGPS.
As and when such members transition into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme career average arrangement, employers must cease contributions to the LGPS for the part-time teaching contract and make contributions to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme instead. Members wishing to opt-out of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for the part-time teaching contract must opt out via our website.

These members must be enrolled into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for their part-time service from the date they move into the career average arrangement and the member must opt-out in the usual way if they don’t wish their part-time service to be pensionable in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. A failure to do so will lead to arrears of contributions being due to the scheme, and the member may miss the opportunity to opt out.

Further information on how to provide us with the service details of such members will be provided prior to April 2015.
