Changes introduced from 1 April 2022

The Teachers’ Pension Scheme has changed from 1 April 2022, with all active members (and future members) being part of the career average scheme.

Be reassured that any previous service you had in the final salary scheme is safe. The changes apply to members who had remained in the final salary scheme and will now build up service in the career average scheme (PDF, 65 KB) (This link opens in a new window).

This will begin the process of correcting the discrimination caused by the transitional protection provisions introduced alongside the career average scheme in 2015, where it was found that people were treated differently depending on their age.

There are further changes needed to happen, and the government is developing the necessary legislation to enable this, which is expected to be in place towards the end of this year. We’ve created a series of videos (This link opens in a new window) to help explain this.

If you’re not clear on these changes and why they’re needed, further details can be found on the specific Transitional Protection section of our website. If you’re not sure if you’re affected by the changes then please watch our video (This link opens in a new window).
