Changes for teachers with additional contracts to their full-time employment

Changes have been introduced for members in the career average arrangement who have additional contracts to their full-time employment.

Before 1 April 2015, if you were a full-time teacher with an additional part-time teaching contract, you could not join the Teachers’ Pension Scheme with your part-time contract. If your employer also participated in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), you would have been eligible to join the LGPS for the part-time teaching contract.

Whilst this will continue to be the case if you’re a member who has remained in the final salary arrangement, this has changed for members who move into the career average arrangement.

From April 2015, the additional part-time teaching contract became eligible in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for members in the career average arrangement only and consequently is no longer eligible in the LGPS. As and when you transition into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme career average arrangement, your employer must cease your contributions to the LGPS for the part-time teaching contract and make your contributions to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme instead.

You must be enrolled into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for your part-time service from the date you move into the career average arrangement. If you wish to opt-out of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for the part-time teaching contract, you must opt out via our website. If your employer does not enrol you into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme it could lead to arrears of contributions being due to the Scheme, and you may miss the opportunity to opt-out from the point of entering the career average arrangement for the part-time contract.
