What do I need to do now?

It’s important that you understand how you’re affected by Transitional Protection and your next steps.

Our Decision Tree, ‘Am I affected’ video (This link opens in a new window) or clicking on the Transitional Protection banner in your My Pension Online account will help with this.

Rollback

As part of the Transitional Protection remedy, all pensionable service for affected members between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022 has been rolled back into the final salary scheme from 1 October 2023.

You need to understand what this means and the potential new opportunities available to those of you who haven't yet taken your retirement benefits. If you haven’t received information on this from us then please read the rollback page on our website, which includes a detailed factsheet.

If you took out flexibilities, or worked any overtime or excess service, in the career average scheme, during the remedy period, you’ll be required to make a decision as these are unavailable in the final salary scheme - we’ll be in touch with you separately about this.

Making your choice between the career average or final salary scheme

If you’re an active or deferred member, you’ll make this choice when you decide to take your benefits at retirement.

If you’re already in receipt of your benefits, we’ll be contacting all members after 1 October 2023 with their options; however, due to the volumes of members affected, this process will be rolled out throughout the remainder of 2023, through to 2025. Any change to your entitlement will be backdated and your patience in this matter is appreciated.

We’d also suggest looking at our Transitional Protection FAQs for further information.

What if I have another public sector pension?

If you’ve got a pension in another public sector pension scheme, then it’s important to let us know by completing our Previous Pensionable Public Service Questionnaire (PDF, 243 KB) (This link opens in a new window), as this might impact the decisions you need to make regarding Transitional Protection.

With another public sector pension you’ve the option to transfer it into this Scheme (there is a time limit on when you’re able to do this) or, even if you choose to leave it where it is, it might provide you with Salary Link protection. The Salary Link is the protection introduced with the move to career average that allows us to use the salaries in career average service when calculating any final salary benefits to which you're entitled.
