Member and period of service affected

Teacher with students

It’s important to understand that many of you aren’t affected by any of the changes and don’t need to do anything. The changes only affect those of you who had pensionable service in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (or another public service pension scheme) on 31 March 2012, have service in the remedy period (1 April 2015 – 31 March 2022) and don’t have a disqualifying break.

Why might I not be affected by the changes?

You’ll not be affected by the changes if you:

  • first joined one of the main public service pension schemes on or after 1 April 2012
  • have had a break in service of more than five years since 1 April 2012 (also known as a disqualifying break)
  • have no service in the remedy period (1 April 2015 – 31 March 2022),
  • retired and took your final salary pension in full prior to 1 April 2015.

To help you understand if you’re affected then watch our ‘Am I affected’ video (This link opens in a new window), visit our decision tree or click on the Transitional Protection banner in your My Pension Online account.
