Bereavement

Where a member with service in the remedy period has died, or dies in the future before taking their benefits, it’ll be a decision maker who is responsible for making the decision regarding service built up during the remedy period. They’ll be given the option for this service to be in either the final salary or career average scheme for the remedy period (1 April 2015 – 31 March 2022).

If they’ve already passed away, the decision maker will be identified, issued with a Remediable Service Statement and asked to make that choice after 1 October 2023.

If they pass away after 1 October 2023 and benefits are already in payment, the decision maker will need to make the choice, which could change the benefits already in payment.

If they pass away after 1 October 2023 and their family benefits aren’t in payment, the decision maker will need to make the choice before full benefits can be paid to any beneficiaries.

For child pensions in payment, the decision maker would need to make the choice on behalf of the child. For children under 18, who live in a different household from the decision maker, their benefits are protected from reduction.

We’ll contact the appropriate decision maker directly and provide them with the information they need to make the choice.
